■ 1. 태평양의 섬, 자유의 기억이 깨어나는 곳
In the Pacific Isles, the Memory of Freedom Awakens
하와이는 단순한 낙원이 아니다.
그곳은 대한민국의 기초가 세워진 성지(聖地)이며, 젊은 이승만이 감옥의 고독 속에서 ‘자유와 독립의 비전’을 처음 품은 땅이다.
Hawaii is not merely a paradise—it is a sacred foundation of the Republic of Korea, where a young Syngman Rheeonce envisioned freedom and independence during his years of exile and reflection.
그가 1904년 호놀룰루에 도착했을 때, 이승만은 단 한 권의 성경과 불타는 신앙만을 지니고 있었다.
그는 그곳에서 “자유는 하늘이 인간에게 준 권리이며, 민주주의는 그 자유의 제도적 표현”임을 확신했다.
When Rhee arrived in Honolulu in 1904, he carried only a Bible and an unyielding faith.
There, he realized that “freedom is a divine right, and democracy is its earthly form.”
그의 하와이 활동은 훗날 대한민국 건국의 씨앗이 되었다.
이 땅에서 세워진 한인기독학원(Korean Christian Institute)과 대한인기독교회는 조국의 독립운동과 신앙의 불길을 함께 키웠다.
His work in Hawaii laid the seeds for Korea’s future nationhood.
Institutions like the Korean Christian Instituteand Korean Methodist Church became sanctuaries for both faith and freedom.
■ 2. “한국의 찰리 커크”, 자유의 교단을 잇다
“Korea’s Charlie Kirk” — Continuing the Pulpit of Freedom
그로부터 한 세기가 지난 오늘, 이승만의 정신을 잇는 또 한 명의 교사가 하와이에 선다.
그의 이름은 전한길(Jeon Han-gil).
그는 한국의 강단에서 자유와 역사의식을 가르치던 스승이었고, 이제는 “한국의 찰리 커크(Korea’s Charlie Kirk)”라 불리는 시대의 연설가로 떠올랐다.
A century later, another teacher stands upon the same Hawaiian soil —
Jeon Han-gil, once a history instructor in Korea, now called “Korea’s Charlie Kirk.”
He carries the same flame of freedom that once burned in Rhee’s heart.
그는 이렇게 외친다.
“자유는 피로 쓰여진 성경이며, - 대한민국은 그 말씀의 증거다.”
“Freedom is the Scripture written in blood,
and the Republic of Korea is its living testimony.”
전한길은 이승만의 건국정신을 - ‘자유·신앙·책임의 삼위일체’로 해석하며, 역사를 단순한 과거의 기록이 아니라 -‘하나님이 세운 나라의 예언서’로 읽는다.
Jeon interprets Rhee’s founding philosophy as a trinity of freedom, faith, and responsibility—
seeing history not as a record of the past, but as a prophetic testament to a God-ordained nation.
■ 3. 찰리 커크의 자유사상 - “자유는 유산이 아니라 사명이다”
Charlie Kirk’s Creed — “Freedom is not a legacy, but a calling”
미국 보수 청년 리더 찰리 커크(Charlie Kirk)는 21세기 신세대의 자유민주주의를 새롭게 해석했다.
그는 이렇게 말했다.
“자유는 조상이 물려주는 것이 아니라, 우리가 싸워 지켜야 할 사명이다.”
“Freedom is not inherited—it is earned, defended, and handed down through courage.”
He founded Turning Point USA,
a movement awakening young Americans to constitutional values, limited government, and the moral foundations of liberty.
그의 사상은 “신앙 없는 자유는 무질서요, 책임 없는 민주주의는 자멸”이라는 명언으로 요약된다.
His message can be summed up simply:
“Liberty without faith becomes chaos, and democracy without responsibility destroys itself.”
그의 순교는 젊은 세대에게 자유의 무게를 일깨웠고,
전한길은 그 정신을 한국의 언어로 자유민주주의 국가로 계승하고 있다.
His tragic death became a moral compass for a generation—
and Jeon now carries that same torch, translating its meaning into the Korean story.
■ 4. 하와이 강연 — 자유의 바통이 이어지는 순간
The Hawaii Lecture — Where the Baton of Freedom Is Passed
오는 10월 26일[주일]오후4시, 호놀룰루 센트럴 유니언 교회에서 열리는 전한길의 특별강연은 단순한 행사 그 이상이다.
그것은 하와이에서 시작된 자유의 언약이 이제는 다시 한 세기 후, 새로운 세대로 이어지는 역사적 장면이다.
On October 26, 2025, at Central Union Church, Honolulu, Jeon’s lecture will mark more than an event—
it will symbolize the renewal of a covenant, the passing of the flame from Rhee’s generation to ours.
“우리가 자유를 지키는 일은 역사를 기억하는 일입니다. 기억 없는 자유는 진리를 잃은 자유입니다.”
“To defend freedom is to remember history. Freedom without memory is truth forgotten.”
주최:한미애국동포연합 (The Korean-American Patriotic Alliance)은 이번 행사를 “한미동맹의 정신과 기독교적 자유의 유산을 다시 세우는 시간”으로 소개했다.
The Korean-American Patriotic Alliance describes this lecture as “a sacred moment to reaffirm the Korea–U.S. alliance and revive the Christian heritage of liberty.”
■ 5. 결론 — 자유는 기억에서, 기억은 믿음에서
Conclusion- Freedom Begins in Memory, and Memory in Faith
하와이는 대한민국의 기억이 머무는 섬이다.
이승만의 눈물, 교민들의 기도, 그리고 이제 전한길의 외침까지—
그 모든 것이 자유의 연대기(Chronicle of Liberty)로 이어지고 있다.
Hawaii remains the island of Korea’s sacred memory—
the tears of Rhee, the prayers of early immigrants, and now Jeon’s resounding voice—
all woven into one Chronicle of Liberty.
그는 말한다.
“하와이의 모래 위에 대한민국의 기초가 놓였다면, 오늘 우리는 그 터 위에 다시 자유의 성전을 세워야 합니다.”
“If the foundation of our nation was laid upon Hawaii’s sands, then today we must raise the sanctuary of freedom upon that same ground.”
그의 강연이 끝날 때, 하와이의 바람 속에는 다시 대한민국의 정신이 울려 퍼질 것이다.
그것은 이승만이 꿈꾸었던 나라, - 찰리 커크가 외쳤던 자유, 그리고 전한길이 지키려는 자유민주주의 외치는 신앙의 나라다.
When his lecture concludes, the winds of Honolulu will once again carry
the soul of the Republic—
the nation Rhee envisioned,the liberty Kirk proclaimed, and the faith Jeon now defends.
